Updated: Nov 28, 2019

Just like us, it is extremely important that we have a wide variety of food groups in our diet so that we can keep ourselves healthy to ensure vitality and longevity! This is the same for our furry friends and although dry food is perfectly fine for your pets, imagine if you only ate a cup full of dry biscuits for breakfast and dinner for your entire life? What about mum’s delicious spaghetti Bolognese or a Sunday roast?

Dogs and cats are at their healthiest stage when eating a large variety of foods that are minimally processed, without all those nasty chemicals! Many of the foods we prepare in our homes contain beneficial enzymes, vitamins and minerals that would be a welcome change for our furry companions, so as much as you can prepare food at home for your pets, the better!

A great quote by Hippocrates, states “Let your food be your medicine”. This is an amazing saying that I have always stood by when feeding myself and my pets!

Taking that next step in life to own your first pet can be a huge responsibility, and like having children, there is a lot of important information that you should know to help raise your pet to the best of your ability. For example, some people don’t even know how dangerous it is to feed their dogs chocolate!

Below are some tips on safe food for your cats and dogs and also the harmful ones to stay clear of!

Only a small selection of food groups was mentioned above and there is clearly more safe and unsafe food for you animals to enjoy! When preparing meals for your pets, If you are ever second guessing whether to feed a certain food to your pet, don’t ever be afraid to ask, either look it up online, or even call up your preferred vet for some assistance! Another tip is, if you wouldn’t eat it, then neither will your pet.

For example; I honestly had no idea that ham was a food that wasn’t recommended to feed to your dog, so when I researched that ham is a salty meat which can really upset your dog’s stomach if it eats too much, I made sure that my friends with dogs were aware! Even more shockingly, one of my friend’s was told by her dog’s puppy play school centre that they frequently use ham as a form of treat when the staff are training the puppies!
